I don't know about you but I love a good cup of coffee, wherever I'm travelling to in the world coffee shops are the first places I seek out. A great coffee shop isn't just about the coffee itself though, ambience, atmosphere and staff all play a part. In this guide i'll introduce you to the best coffee shops in Derby.

I work in Derby and I spend a good amount of time exploring coffee shops in Derby. They are the perfect base for getting work done, having meetings or grabbing a morning pick me up. My choices in this post are all independent (no chains) and have something special about them. So read on, try a few and get that caffeine hit!

Miss Coffee

Address: Intu, Crown Walk, 43, Derby DE1 2NP
Phone: 01332 987619

This cafe/coffee shop is something special and truly unique., It is also hard to describe. It is a tiny cafe situated inside the Intu shopping centre. I venture there not for coffee, although they do decent coffee but for Taiwanese/Chinese treats. They do some awesome bubble tea alongside Chinese sweet treats, they even sell Japanese cakes and sweets. Check out their selection of tea's and matcha-based drinks for something a little different. The place itself is tiny, there's only about 10 tables in the place but this ranks high in my list of the best coffee shops in Derby!

Rask

Address: Sadler Bridge Studios, Sadler Gate, Derby DE1 3NR

I stumbled upon Rask on my lunch one day whilst I was looking for somewhere for lunch. This is a coffee shop for the health conscious. It is a scandi style coffee shop that the owners say is inspired by the Danish art of Hygge. It provides a relaxed and comfy ambience where you can enjoy delicious healthy food and drinks, and is the perfect place to meet friends for lunch. I recommend the rask bowls for a healthy lunch. These bowls are filled with a selection of raw, cooked, roasted & toasted salads & complemented with protein, nuts, seeds, vegetables & fruit.

The Book Cafe

Address: Corn Market, Derby DE1 1QH
Phone: 01332 294008
This is the place I visit most often. It is just a 5-min walk away from my office and I'm in love with the decor in here. It is really quirky and kitsch and as the name may suggest it is covered in books. The coffee is top notch and they have a great selection of baked goods. I go here for breakfast often and always opt for smashed avocado on wholegrain toast. Prices are reasonable. There's a whole lot to love about this place and it's what makes it a worthy addition to the best coffee shops in Derby.

The Squashed Tomato

Address: 16 The Strand, Derby DE1 1BE
I'll start by saying that the customer service in this place is second to none. The staff bend over backwards to accommodate you and if you have specific dietary requirements then this is the place for you. The place itself has a contemporary style, great but small menu and delicious coffee. This is the perfect brunch location. It is situated just across the road from a beautiful art museum for all you culture lovers.

BEAN Cafe

AddressFriar Gate Studios, Ford St, Derby DE1 1EE
Phone01332 258317
This place is situated just a few doors down from my office so I'm a regular for both dine-in and take-away. It has an extensive food and drink menu, turns into a burger bar in the evenings and offers an amazing bottomless brunch. It has a very easygoing ambience and modern decor and offers fair trade coffee and homemade cakes.

Portobello Cafe

Address: 50 Queen St, Derby DE1 3DE

Phone: 01332 349966
Portobello is more a take-away sandwich shop although you can eat in if you wish. There's only table space for a small group. Their coffee is great but where they really excel is in their sandwiches. Portobello is a regular Friday breakfast venue at work. We often do a sandwich round and I always opt for the halloumi and avocado with sriracha sauce. Trust me it is out of this world. It sounds like a weird combo but it works.
